International Women’s Day

Monday is International Women’s Day, a time where we celebrate women, our historical achievements, those we continue to achieve today and those to be achieved in the future. IWD has was first observed at the dawn of the 20^th Century, a period of great industrial, social and political change. 

 

In 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York calling on officials to address inequality, oppression and push for shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote.  A year later the first National Women’s Day was held across the USA.

 

Two years later at a Conference of Working Women, Clara Zetkin, proposed the idea that there should be a dedicated Women’s Day - to be marked on the same day, internationally, every year – its aim to further the demands of women.

 

1911 International Women’s Day was honoured for the first time in when one million women and men attended IWD rallies campaigning for women’s rights and equality.  Tragically only a few days later 140 women from immigrant families perished in the New York City “Triangle Fire”.

 

Times have changed since the early 1900’s and the IDW movement has grown and many nations have adopted the day as a public holiday in which mothers, wives and grandmothers are pampered and spoiled by their families.  But while we have female astronauts, Prime Ministers and industry leaders there is still disparity in equality which the movement seeks to change.

 

The theme for 2021 is #ChooseToChallenge…
