Let's talk about sleep associations! Children have a whole number of sleep associations that may have begun from an early age at a time when you didn’t even realise you were creating one. But this isn’t a bad thing!

I will start by saying that a sleep association is not a negative tool and there is no right or wrong when it comes to sleep associations. It is simply about tending to the needs of your child and finding what works to assist in getting a longer sleep cycle for them. And I don't see the harm in that!

So what does a sleep association look like? It could be any of the following:
Remember that you don't need to feel guilty for using a sleep association and it isn't a problem until it becomes a problem. And when it does become a problem, you will be able to adapt and change but for now, your baby is happy and you're happy and that's all that matters!

But you may be wondering what happens when the sleep association does become a problem and it's time to wean?

You'll know when you're in this situation because it'll be when your littles ones sleep association starts to cause multiple wakes, but I want to give you the confidence that you can do this! Night weaning a sleep association will take time, calmness and patience. But it is easily achieved by replacing it with something else that is more sustainable and doesn't require your constant attention. For this I highly recommend a comforter.

Transitioning to a comforter will also take time, but keeping consistent with it and offering it to your child at bedtime and when they wake will create that comfort association!

You can use my handy tip of sleeping with it under your pillow for a few nights or carrying it under your top to make sure it gets your scent! Just ensure that it's made of breathable material and about the size of a handkerchief.

I'll cover more information about introducing a comforter in next weeks newsletter!
