Welcome to the mini newsletter series on Night Weaning!

Night weaning is one of those things that many parents fine themselves feeling unsure of when to start it or how to go about it. It's something that I am asked about a lot so I'm going to provide you with some tips and advice on where to start!

Starting with how to know if your baby is ready to night wean and then in the next email I’ll give you some tips on how to go about it. I hope this provides you with some clarity on whether to start night weaning or not.
These night feeds you're having can be such a peaceful bonding time between you and your bub, but sometimes they can seem as though they are becoming more and more frequent rather than dropping off. Perhaps you’re feeling that it’s time to start transitioning your baby off these night feeds and that’s okay!

The first thing to know is that night weaning doesn’t need to occur at at set age or weight and some children will self-wean from night feeds and some will need a little nudge in the right direction. To give you a bit of an idea though, here’s a basic outline of night feed by age:

Under 12 weeks = 2-4 feeds per night
    3-6 months = 1-2 feeds per night
    6-12 months = 0-1 feeds per night
    12 + months = 0 feeds

I can't tell you when the right time is so start night weaning, but trust me, it is something that you will just know. You’ll be looking for when the constant night wakes and broken sleep is affecting more than just your mood but your little one too. But remember that night weaning is something that will only work when you are truly ready for it. It you choose to start night weaning only to decide that you are not sure about it only makes it harder for you and your baby.

If your little one is showing any of the signs outlined above then it might be time to start night weaning! Stay tuned for part two of this newsletter where I'll talk you through the steps to get started.

In the meantime, check out our sleep programs which will help you gain confidence in your decision to night wean or not!
