    Surgeon General William George Nicholas Manley earned his VC in 1864 attempting to save mortally wounded Commander Hay and others during the assault of Gate Pā, Tauranga. Fast forward to 1870 he was serving with the British Ambulance Corps which was attached to the 22nd Division of the Prussian Army when he received his Iron Cross second class on recommendation of the German Crown Prince.
