    Answer: D. 12

John Lincoln Clem unofficially joined the Army at age 10 as a drummer boy. He had been in battle a few times before becoming famous at the battle of Chickamagua. There he was nearly captured but shot a Confederate Colonel before making his escape. When he got back to Union lines, it was reported he had 3 holes shot through his hat. He was speedily promoted to Sergeant becoming the youngest US non-commissioned officer ever.
