A guide to caring for our wildlife during storms

Attract more wildlife to your garden

    Dear krazypromo,

The last couple of weeks have been a challenge for us all, contending with harsh winds, floods and rainfall - its been an utter washout.

Our birds and wildlife also face challenges when the weather is disruptive. Food can be harder to come by and sheltering from the harsh elements can sometimes mean missing a much needed meal. This alongside nesting season presents an exhausting and difficult time for our birds, so they need high calorie and high energy foods to keep up their strength.

With flooded fields and towns, searching for nesting materials and natural food will be even harder, but we can help - we've put together a handy guide to caring for our garden birds during wet and windy weather.

    Full feeders, full bellies.

Birds can struggle to get out and about during a storm to search for food, but if they recognise and remember your garden and feeders as a source of constant food, they are bound to pay you a visit. Feeders which fix onto the wall are perfect as they are less likely to be blown around by the wind.

    High-calorie and high-energy foods

The cold, wet weather can present challenges for our birds to stay warm. A nice high-calorie meal will ensure they make it through the harsh nights.

Fat products are heavier and more sturdy, so they will not make mess when blown by the wind unlike some seed foods.
