Why Winter Feed?

Why Winter Feeding is so Important

Birds naturally source their own foods through their natural hunting instincts, this is much easier in the spring and summer when the ground is soft and visible. The winter introduces challenges to them as their natural food sources are scarce and water can be frozen over. By providing high-calorie foods such as our suet logs and hi-energy seed mix can offer much needed fats for extra energy to help them get through the next couple of months.

Providing a warm and cosy nest box ensures birds have somewhere safe to hide away from the cold winter nights and gets them ready to settle down and make it their family home for this nesting season.

Fresh water should also be available but you should regularly check that this has not frozen over!

Did you know that Wrens have a scientific name of 'Troglodytidae' or Troglodyte! which translates to 'cave dweller'. This references their behaviour and feeding habits of hobbling around on the floor and sticking their long, thin bills into tiny crevices for insects and spiders!
