    Look closely and you'll see the orange pollen on this monarch butterfly's legs. As it flits from flower to flower sipping nectar, it inadvertently transfers this pollen. Pollination is vital for certain garden crops. The flowers of cucumbers, squash, and melons, as well as apples and pears, must be pollinated before they'll produce fruit.
    Pollinators can be fussy about what's on the menu. Here are some guidelines for choosing plants:
    1. Flat-topped flowers like zinnias give butterflies a place to land to feed. 2. Monarch butterfly larvae (caterpillars) feed almost exclusively on milkweed leaves.

    3. The long beaks of hummingbirds can reach deep into tube-like bee balm blooms (also favored by bees with a long, tongue-like proboscis). 4. Bowl-shaped flowers are often abuzz with honey bees, which have a shorter proboscis.
    5. Spots on foxgloves, called nectar guides, show bumble bees the way in. 6. Bumble bees also have the strength to open hinged flowers, such as snapdragons.
