Ukraine is home to a plethora of historic architecture, including several UNESCO monuments of global significance. Kyiv’s St. Sophia cathedral, for example, dates back to the 11th century and is as important to Russian Orthodox Christians as St. Peter’s Basilica is to Roman Catholics.

The war in Ukraine is threatening these monuments. If they’re destroyed, can they be rebuilt? Yes. (Ukrainians have done it before. Two medieval churches in Kyiv that were demolished by the Soviets and Nazis were reconstructed in 1999-2000.) But they can never be replaced.
