"I took a little road trip with my father to pick up the watch. We each bought one that day, which made both purchases extra special. His was a blue dial Datejust 41 – similar to what we now call “The Biden.” When we arrived at the store, The Bruiser was waiting on the counter for me with a price tag around $8,000. After we left, I remember looking at my wrist and feeling a sense of finality – as if this would be the only watch I’d ever need for the rest of my life." HODINKEE's Danny Milton shares his story of finding the watch he promises to never sell.

"Sport watches come in many shapes and sizes. While I may love a good dive watch, or the old-school charm of a racing chronograph, for me, nothing matches the appeal of a solid GMT. A good example is built like a dive watch and wouldn’t look out of place anywhere in the world. I think there is something special about GMTs, about their ethos, their simple but powerful functionality, and their ability to ground you in your roots while adapting to wherever it is you want to go in life."

"Last year I put together a list of 10 vintage watches that I genuinely believe(d) should cost more than they do, for a variety of reasons. Today, I will take a look at another sector of watches with the same pervading thought: these watches deserve to be more expensive than they are. But today, I’ll be looking at modern, but out of production, watches. What I mean is that these pieces were designed in the modern era, with the help of CAD, and modern production technologies, and in many cases they offer a tremendous amount of watchmaking firepower. But, for some reason, they just don’t cost that much (relatively speaking)."

It’s a well-known story, at least in the community of vintage watch collectors. It’s a story about one of the most important events in the history of watches. And so it has been almost obligatory for bloggers and journalists to publish narratives of the race between three watch companies (or joint ventures of watch companies) to produce the first automatic chronograph. There were three contestants – Seiko, working alone in Japan; Zenith, around the time of its acquisition of Movado; and the joint venture between the Swiss brands Heuer, Breitling, and Hamilton-Buren working with movement specialist Dubois-Depraz.
